Everyone’s body is different. While some of these methods may help one person, they may not necessarily work for everyone. It is important that you contact your physician or fertility specialist when considering any of the following fertility preserving methods.

Fertility. Such a simple word, for such a large and complicated bodily process. Some people are able to naturally conceive with little difficulty while others may need quite a bit of assistance. There isn’t only one right way to boost your fertility. Please do not feel shame in asking for help.

When it comes down to improving your fertility or better yet, preserving it, there are many steps that can be taken by both males and females. Even if you are not planning on conceiving anytime soon, it is vital that you begin taking the necessary steps now so that when you do decide you want to have children later on, your eggs are healthy and sperm are ready to fertilize.

Following a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, which can be found in a wide variety of colorful organic vegetables and fruits, has been shown to protect eggs from free-radical damage. Another big factor in egg preservation is maintaining proper blood sugar levels and treating insulin resistance.  This will help overall fertility and can usually be achieved through a low carb diet as well as exercise.  Patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) often have insulin resistance and commonly have abundant eggs with diminished quality.  Often after following a paleo type diet and getting blood sugar levels under control, egg quality improves which is evident with higher conception rates.   According to research a higher omega 3 to 6 ratio was found to develop fewer follicles but enhance the quality of embryos which is the primary goal (1). Salmon, mackerel, chia seeds, walnuts, & sardines are foods with abundant omega 3 levels.  When it comes to egg health, think quality not quantity.

Not only will this diet help improve the health of your eggs, it will also improve your overall health which will allow you to live a healthier life with the lowest risk of disease.

In addition to your healthy diet, living an overall healthy lifestyle will also increase chances of maintaining your fertility. Not smoking, low consumption of alcohol, and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day can all help keep your body happy, healthy, and fertile.

There are many other methods that a woman can take to help preserve her fertility. One method is egg freezing which allows women to freeze their eggs at the height of their fertility and use them at a later date when they are ready.  Luckily, even though the eggs age faster than the rest of the body, the uterus does not, making it possible to use previously frozen eggs to conceive at a later date.  Also, both women and men can try acupuncture therapy to increase and preserve their fertility. Acupuncture can increase fertility by reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, and balancing the endocrine system, according to multiple studies and medical research.
